Het zogenaamde Orgelbüchlein van Johann Sebastian Bach kent iedere organist enorgelliefhebber. Het is een serie koraalvoorspelen bij diverse koralen bij delen van hetkerkelijk jaar, advent, kersttijd, Nieuwjaar, passietijd, Pasen en Pinksteren. Bach gafdeze bundel de volgende breed uitgemetentitel mee: Orgelboekje, waarin de beginnen-de organist een handleiding wordt gegeven om op allerlei manieren een koraal door tevoeren en zich ook in de pedaalstudie te habiliteren wanneer in sommige koralen hetpedaal geheel obligaat getrakteerd wordt.

For Albert Schweitzer the Orgelbüchlein was “The Bible of Bach’. For Russell Stinson it is ‘simultaneously a compositional treatise, a collection of liturgical organ music, an organ method and a theological statement. These four identities are so closely intertwined that it is hard to know where one leaves off and another begins.’

Hot on the heels of the extended, and now completed, Orgelbüchlein Project (which commissioned 118 new pieces to complete the chorales that Bach did not compose), comes this offering from Fugue State Films and Sietze de Vries. Over seven c30′ films (on one DVD) and two related CDs (which contain all the music from the films), Sietze de Vries plays all of the 45 chorales of Bach’s Orgelbüchlein. He then plays his own improvised chorale preludes in the style of Bach, using 45 of the 118 chorale melodies that Bach left titles for, but didn’t compose. In the videos, alongside his improvisations, he explores the philosophy of improvisation and shows how to improvise in the style of Bach, using the important historic organs in the Martinikerk, Groningen and the Petruskerk, Leens, both tucked away in the top right-hand corner of The Netherlands.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Orgelbüchlein BWV 599−644 consists of 45 chorale preludes for organ, with one of them in two versions. They were penned between 1708 and 1717 when the composer was organist at the ducal court in Weimar. The original plan was for 164 chorale preludes which would span the Church’s liturgical year. In the event, the project remained incomplete. These Lutheran chorales are short pieces and in four parts, with some canons thrown in. At the start of the DVD the organist Sietze de Vries, armed with a facsimile edition of the Orgelbüchlein, explains the work, showing the viewer the completed pages and the many blank pages in the latter part of the book. His aim is to perform all of Bach’s 45 completed chorales, then improvise the chorales of the missing pages.

This latest offering from Fugue State Films is quite simply a thing of wonder, a thing of great beauty. Visually, aurally, educationally, emotionally… it ticks all the right boxes. For the beginner, the keen amateur, and the experienced professional organist alike Bach’s Orgelbüchlein (‘Little Organ Book’) has long been a foundation stone for the development of sound playing and compositional technique. For the listener the collection is a veritable treasure chest of exquisite and affecting gems.

Het orgel van de Der Aa-kerk in Groningen heeft nadrukkelijk twee gezichten. Enerzijds is daar de flinke hoeveelheid pijpwerk van Schnitger, die op zijn beurt ouder materiaal hergebruikte. Anderzijds hebben Timpe en Van Oeckelen een stevig negentiende-eeuws stempel op het klankbeeld gedrukt. Bij de laatste restauratie, in 2011 door Reil voltooid, is de aangetroffen toestand in wezen gerespecteerd. De klankkwaliteit van met name het (vroeg-) barokke pijpwerk in combinatie met de fantastische akoestiek is altijd indrukwekkend geweest. De negentiende-eeuwse elementen profiteren natuurlijk ook van diezelfde akoestiek. Dit orgel is daarmee met recht een unicum te noemen.

Het is alweer een hele tijd geleden dat er van het bijzondere orgel in de Der Aa-kerk van Groningen een cd is verschenen. Het actieve team van JSB Records heeft nu een nieuwe cd van dit van oorsprong Arp Schnitger-orgel uitgebracht. En het is opnieuw een bijzondere uitgave geworden. Met een programma dat uit twee afzonderlijke bestaat, een Schnitger-klank of liever gezegd een barokke klank, maar het heeft ook een Romantische kant.

Sietze de Vries (b. 1973) is a Dutch organist from Groningen. His father was organist of the Reformed Church in Niezijl, a suburb of Groningen, where his grandfather was sexton. Following high school at the H. N. Werkman College in Groningen, in 1988 de Vries started organ lessons at the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen. These lessons took place on the 1692 Arp Schnitger organ of the Martinikerk in Groningen. As a student at the Conservatory de Vries’s teachers included Johan Beeftink, Jan Jongepier, and Wim van Beek, and he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1994. He studied organ under Jos van der Kooy at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and obtained his master’s degree in 1996, following which he studied improvisation for a further two years, again under Jos van der Kooy. Sietze de Vries won prizes at no fewer than fifteen national and international organ competitions, including first prize at the Haarlem International Organ Improvisation.

Als je in de protestantse kerken in Nederland om je heen kijkt, kun je vaststellen dat de Geneefse psalmen in tal van gemeenten de laatste decennia veel terrein verloren hebben. In grote delen van wat nu de Protestantse Kerk heet, hebben de psalmen het eerder al moeten afleggen tegen de gezangen uit het Liedboek voor de kerken en daarvoor de Hervormde Bundel van 1938. Niet zelden is de verhouding op de liturgieborden één psalm op vijf of zes gezangen.

Het orgel van de Der Aa-kerk in Groningen is geliefd, maar ook omstreden. Geliefd vanwege zijn ‘magische klanken’. Maar ook omstreden vanwege zijn bijzondere samenstelling

In het booklet van zijn jongste cd gaat Sietze de Vries uitgebreid in op de ‘lange en roerige’ geschiedenis van het orgel. Het kreeg ‘wereldfaam’ als Schnitger-orgel (1702), maar het bevat ook pijpwerk uit vroeger en later tijd. In de aanloop naar de grote restauratie, voltooid in 2011 (Reil), leidde dat tot een ware stammenstrijd. De rechter moest er zelfs aan te pas komen. Het ging daarbij vooral om de romantische toevoegingen. Gelukkig is besloten tot behoud van het orgel in zijn twintigste-eeuwse staat.
