Omstreeks 1708 begon Johann Sebastian Bach aan een ambitieus project waarbij hij zich ten doel stelde om korte voorspelen te schrijven bij 164 koralen uit het lutherse gezangboek in de volgorde van het kerkelijk jaar. Hij werkte er vooral aan in de jaren 1713-1717 toen hij als hoforganist in Weimar werkzaam was. In 1717 schreef hij in het notenboekje waarin hij de koraalzettingen aan het noteren was:

Orgel-Büchlein Worinne einem anfahenden Organisten Anleitung gegeben wird, auff al- lerhand Arth einen Choral durchzuführen, anbey auch sich im Pedal studio zu habilitiren, indem in solchen darinne befindlichen Choralen das Pedal gantz obligat tractiret vird. Dem Höchsten Gott allein zu Ehren, Dem Nechsten, draus sich zu belehren.

In de DVD die Bach’s missing pages begeleidt, legt Sietze de Vries uit waarom Bachs Orgelbüchlein voor organisten een soort bijbel is geworden. De composities zijn allemaal erg kort, op enkele uitzonderingen na, en geven op een bijzonder geconcentreerde manier toegang tot Bachs muziek. Voor organisten is erin elk koraalpreludium een nieuwe technische moeilijkheid te overwinnen, en voor schriftuurstudenten vormt deze bundel een bijna onuitputtelijke bron aan compositietechnieken. Zoals Bach het zelf aangaf op de titelpagina, schreef hij het ‘boekje’ voor aanvangende organisten om hun te leren op allerlei manieren een koraalmelodie te bewerken en om zich in het pedaalspel te oefenen. Een vergelijkbaar voorwoord vindt men trouwens ook bij het eerste boek van het Wohltemperiertes Klavier (1722) met preludia en fuga’s die dan weer de bijbel voor pianisten en klavecinisten zijn geworden.

This enlightening. educational, and engaging DVD is one of the most enjoyable and well-presented I have watched in a long time. It has a compelling narrative told over seven 30-minute films by Sietze de Vries, and is a fascinating survey where the listener does, as the press material points out, receive a glimpse of the enormous scale of Bach’s vision for his Orgelbüchlein.

Die Essenz des Lebens ist in dem Moment sonnenklar, sobald man Vater oder Mutter wird und ein neugeborenes Baby in den Armen hält. Plötzlich dreht sich alles um das neue Leben und alles andere tritt in den Hintergrund.« So beginnt Sietze de Vries im Booklet seine Einführung in das Programm der CD und geht damit auf das »kraftvolle Bild der Mutter« in der katholischen Tradition ein. Zur “Essenz des Lebens” von Sietze de Vries gehört offenbar auch die Musik. Wie sehr er die Musik lebt, lasst sich einmal mehr auf der CD Magnificat aus dem Hildesheimer Dom spüren. Seine Musikalität muss nichts zur Schau stellen, es geht nicht um exaltierte Virtuosität oder vordergründige Effekte. Egal ob barock oder romantisch: Absolut stilsicher musiziert de Vries mit einer atemberaubenden Selbstverständlichkeit, mit der die Musik aus sich heraus spricht ~ ganz gleich ob Literaturspiel oder Improvisation.

Het zogenaamde Orgelbüchlein van Johann Sebastian Bach kent iedere organist enorgelliefhebber. Het is een serie koraalvoorspelen bij diverse koralen bij delen van hetkerkelijk jaar, advent, kersttijd, Nieuwjaar, passietijd, Pasen en Pinksteren. Bach gafdeze bundel de volgende breed uitgemetentitel mee: Orgelboekje, waarin de beginnen-de organist een handleiding wordt gegeven om op allerlei manieren een koraal door tevoeren en zich ook in de pedaalstudie te habiliteren wanneer in sommige koralen hetpedaal geheel obligaat getrakteerd wordt.

For Albert Schweitzer the Orgelbüchlein was “The Bible of Bach’. For Russell Stinson it is ‘simultaneously a compositional treatise, a collection of liturgical organ music, an organ method and a theological statement. These four identities are so closely intertwined that it is hard to know where one leaves off and another begins.’

Hot on the heels of the extended, and now completed, Orgelbüchlein Project (which commissioned 118 new pieces to complete the chorales that Bach did not compose), comes this offering from Fugue State Films and Sietze de Vries. Over seven c30′ films (on one DVD) and two related CDs (which contain all the music from the films), Sietze de Vries plays all of the 45 chorales of Bach’s Orgelbüchlein. He then plays his own improvised chorale preludes in the style of Bach, using 45 of the 118 chorale melodies that Bach left titles for, but didn’t compose. In the videos, alongside his improvisations, he explores the philosophy of improvisation and shows how to improvise in the style of Bach, using the important historic organs in the Martinikerk, Groningen and the Petruskerk, Leens, both tucked away in the top right-hand corner of The Netherlands.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Orgelbüchlein BWV 599−644 consists of 45 chorale preludes for organ, with one of them in two versions. They were penned between 1708 and 1717 when the composer was organist at the ducal court in Weimar. The original plan was for 164 chorale preludes which would span the Church’s liturgical year. In the event, the project remained incomplete. These Lutheran chorales are short pieces and in four parts, with some canons thrown in. At the start of the DVD the organist Sietze de Vries, armed with a facsimile edition of the Orgelbüchlein, explains the work, showing the viewer the completed pages and the many blank pages in the latter part of the book. His aim is to perform all of Bach’s 45 completed chorales, then improvise the chorales of the missing pages.

This latest offering from Fugue State Films is quite simply a thing of wonder, a thing of great beauty. Visually, aurally, educationally, emotionally… it ticks all the right boxes. For the beginner, the keen amateur, and the experienced professional organist alike Bach’s Orgelbüchlein (‘Little Organ Book’) has long been a foundation stone for the development of sound playing and compositional technique. For the listener the collection is a veritable treasure chest of exquisite and affecting gems.
